Pískovna u Dračice

Rapšach, Czechia

About this place

Pískovna u Dračice is a small yet remarkably varied nature reserve straddling the cadastral territories of Rapšach and Suchdol nad Lužnicí, in the Jindřichův Hradec district of South Bohemia. Covering just under 8 hectares, it sits within the third protection zone of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and was formally designated a natural monument in June 2001.

Why is it called a "sand pit"?

The name gives away the site's origin: this was once an active sand and gravel quarry. Extraction work exposed layers of Quaternary sediment, revealing geological and geomorphological features that are unusual for the region. The nearby Dračice stream, which lends the site its name, flows close to the former excavation.

What is there to see?

The former quarry has a distinctly layered landscape. Rocky outcrops left behind by mining created dry, sun-baked xerothermic habitats, while the bottom of the pit collected water to form small wetland patches. This unlikely pairing of two opposite habitat types within one compact site is what makes the reserve stand out.

What wildlife lives here?

The mosaic of dry and wet habitats supports plant and animal communities rarely found together elsewhere in the area. The pools at the bottom of the former pit serve as breeding grounds for amphibians, including protected species such as green toads, agile frogs, and European tree frogs. Reptiles found on the dry outcrops include grass snakes and sand lizards. It was precisely this combination of amphibians, reptiles, and xerothermic plant life that justified placing the site under legal protection.

How do you get there?

Pískovna u Dračice is fenced along its perimeter but remains accessible to walkers and cyclists via the public roads and field tracks that run around it. The most convenient approach is along the field path from the junction near the Paříž settlement (part of Tušť) toward Rapšach, or from the Rapšach–Františkov road. The reserve lies along popular cycling routes through southern Třeboňsko, making it easy to combine with a longer bike trip, for instance alongside a visit to Rapšach itself or nearby Suchdol nad Lužnicí.

Why is it worth a visit?

This is a destination for travelers who appreciate nature in one of its less obvious, "post-industrial" forms — a former quarry that has, over time, turned into valuable habitat for rare species. Walking the paths around the site offers a chance to see how nature reclaims ground once reshaped by human activity, all while enjoying a quiet, lightly visited corner of southern Bohemia.
