Malá pískovna (Tušť)

Suchdol nad Lužnicí, Czechia

About this place

Malá pískovna (Tušť) is a flooded former sand-and-gravel quarry pit near the village of Tušť, in the municipality of Suchdol nad Lužnicí, in the Třeboňsko region of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The lake is considered one of the most popular and most beautiful spots for natural swimming in all of South Bohemia, drawing crowds of visitors from nearby towns as well as tourists staying in the wider Třeboň area during the summer.

Where did this lake come from?

The lake formed when water filled the pit left behind after sand and gravel extraction — material once used for construction. Once mining ended, the excavation gradually filled with water, creating today's expansive, clean lake ringed by sandy and grassy shores that give it the feel of a seaside resort.

How does Malá pískovna differ from the neighboring Velká pískovna?

Several similar flooded quarry pits lie in the area around Tušť, including the neighboring Velká tušťská pískovna, but it is Malá that is set aside for recreation and swimming. Velká pískovna serves a different purpose — it forms part of a drinking-water supply that provides water to more than 10,000 residents of the Třeboňsko region, which is why swimming and entering the water there is strictly prohibited. No such restriction applies at Malá pískovna; here, swimming is in fact the whole point of a visit.

What is there to do here?

The main draw is swimming in clean, refreshing water that stays pleasant even during the hottest summer days. Expansive sandy and grassy beaches leave plenty of room to relax, and in many spots the water deepens very gradually, a feature families with young children particularly appreciate. Beyond swimming, visitors can play beach volleyball or head out on a paddleboard. A kiosk selling snacks and drinks operates on site, nearby campsites and waterside restaurants round out the amenities, and a parking area is available for those arriving by car.

How do you get there, and what does it cost?

Entry to the site is free. Coming from the direction of Třeboň, you turn left at the edge of the village of Suchdol nad Lužnicí, from where a road leads directly to the lake. It's a popular destination for day trips, both for locals and for tourists staying overnight elsewhere in the Třeboňsko region.

Who is this place for?

Malá pískovna makes an obvious choice for a summer day out by the water for families with children, thanks to its gentle, gradual entry into the lake. It also appeals to anyone who prefers swimming in a natural body of water over crowded, commercial pools, as well as beach volleyball players and paddleboarders, for whom the site offers ready conditions.
