Pieta

Prościejów, Czechia

About this place

Pieta is a Baroque stone sculpture depicting the Sorrowful Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ taken down from the cross. It stands at the corner of Vrahovická and Smetanova streets in Prostějov, Moravia, and ranks among the city's quieter but historically intriguing sacred monuments.

Where exactly does the sculpture stand?

The Pieta stands on the corner of an enclosure wall at the intersection of Vrahovická and Smetanova streets, in the part of Prostějov known as Vrahovice. The figure rests on a pillar built of sandstone blocks, topped with a profiled sandstone cornice. The sculpture itself — set in a horizontal composition, slightly larger than life-size — is placed on a prismatic pedestal decorated with side scrolls (volute-shaped ornaments).

How do we know when it was made?

A cartouche inscription survives on the side of the pedestal, naming the commissioner and the year of creation: IOAN BARTOS and the date MDCCXLVII, that is, 1747. This inscription allows the work to be dated to the mid-18th century, a period when Baroque art flourished across the lands of today's Czech Republic.

Has the Pieta always stood in this spot?

Not necessarily. The sculpture's original location is not known with certainty. In the 1930s it was photographically documented amid ongoing construction work, with a caption noting it stood "along the road from Prostějov" — possibly near the present-day intersection of Smetanova and Vrahovická streets. It was only in the 1960s that the sculpture's current location was convincingly confirmed by documentary sources.

Is it a legally protected monument?

Yes. The sculpture was entered into the state list of immovable cultural monuments on 24 August 1962, by decision of the school and culture commission of the District National Committee in Prostějov. In the heritage register it is listed under the name "Socha Panny Marie Bolestné" (Statue of Our Lady of Sorrows).

What condition is the sculpture in today?

An inspection carried out in 2023 found significant signs of wear and material damage, typical of centuries-old outdoor sculptures exposed to the elements. In response, a restoration plan was commissioned from academic sculptor René Tíkal, aimed at preserving the monument for future generations.

What is a Pietà, exactly?

Pietà (Italian for "pity" or "compassion") is a subject in Christian art depicting the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Jesus Christ after his descent from the cross, held in her lap. It is a specific form of the broader theme of the Lamentation of Christ, in which Mary alone mourns her son — without additional figures, although other renderings of the subject may include angels or other figures typical of Lamentation scenes. The motif was especially popular in Baroque sacred sculpture, often erected along roads, in cemeteries, and at crossroads as an expression of piety and a place of prayer for travelers.
