About this place
Picota is a summit in the Serra de Monchique range in Portugal's Algarve, close to the town of Monchique. It rises to 773 metres above sea level and is the second-highest point in these mountains. People mostly come for the view, which on a clear day reaches well beyond the surrounding hills.
Where is Picota and what is the Serra de Monchique?
The Serra de Monchique is a mountain range in the western Algarve, roughly 20 km inland from the coast. Against the flatter, seaside part of the region it stands out as greener and more rugged. Picota lies in the municipality of Monchique and is one of its best-known viewpoints.
What can you see from the top?
A viewing point with an observation platform sits at the summit. With good visibility you can take in a panorama of the surrounding mountain slopes and, in the distance, the plains of the Alentejo. Visitors also describe views toward the Algarve coast and the sea shimmering far away. Pick a day without haze or low cloud, since that decides how far you can see.
How do you get to Picota?
There are three options:
- Drive to the car park. A paved road leads almost to the top. From the car park it is a short walk, reportedly about 50 metres, to the viewpoint.
- Drive to the summit. The summit can also be reached by car, although that road is much narrower and calls for extra care.
- Hike. A hiking trail leads up to the peak. A popular circular walk of about 11 km runs from Monchique to Picota and back.
Who is it for?
Picota suits both people who want a scenic stop without a long walk and hikers who prefer to earn the summit on foot. It pairs well with a visit to Monchique itself and other places in the Serra de Monchique. Bring an extra layer, as it is cooler up high than on the coast, and water if you plan to hike.
