Pico Ruivo

Santana, Portugal

About this place

Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on Madeira and in the entire Madeira archipelago. Sources give its height as roughly 1,861 to 1,862 metres above sea level (the figures differ by a metre), making it the third highest mountain in Portugal. It lies in the Santana municipality, in the Maciço Central range, at about 32.7587° N, 16.9423° W.

Where is Pico Ruivo?

The summit rises on the island of Madeira, in the municipality of Santana, within the Maciço Central mountain range. This is the high central part of the island, with views over successive valleys and ridges.

How high is Pico Ruivo?

The figure most often quoted is 1,862 m, though other sources give 1,861 m (about 6,106 ft). The small difference comes from different measurements. Either way, it is the highest point on Madeira and the third highest summit in Portugal.

How do you reach Pico Ruivo?

The summit can be reached on foot only. There are two main approaches:

  • from Pico do Areeiro, another well-known viewpoint on the island,
  • from Achada do Teixeira, a shorter and easier trail that suits those who prefer a gentler ascent.

Choose your route according to fitness and available time, since the trail from Achada do Teixeira is described as noticeably easier.

What can you see from the top?

The summit gives a panorama across the island. You can see the green mountains around Curral das Freiras and the valleys of Ribeira Grande and São Jorge. On days with clear visibility, you can also make out the island of Porto Santo and the Desertas Islands. Conditions at this altitude change, so a far view is not guaranteed every day.

The refuge below the summit

To the north, just below the top, stands the mountain refuge Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo, renovated in 2019. It is a useful landmark for hikers in this area.
