About this place
Pico da Vara is the highest mountain on São Miguel, the largest island of Portugal's Azores archipelago. It rises to 1,103 metres above sea level, and the surrounding land is protected as the Pico da Vara Nature Reserve. The peak lies in the eastern part of the island, near the village of Santo António de Nordestinho, which is also where the only currently open trail to the summit begins.
Why visit Pico da Vara?
The mountain offers two reasons to go: standing on the island's rooftop, and seeing one of the most valuable remnants of the Azores' original nature. Around the peak grows the biggest surviving stand of native laurel forest (laurisilva) on São Miguel. Forests like this once covered much of the archipelago but now survive only in small patches, which makes this one especially important.
Which bird lives around Pico da Vara?
The forest is home to the Azores bullfinch, known locally as the priolo (Pyrrhula murina). It is a vulnerable species found only on this island, and the area around the peak is a Special Protection Zone because of it. With some luck you may spot one while walking, but it is a shy bird, and the reserve's rules deserve respect.
What is the trail to the summit like?
The route starts at the Forest Guard House (Casa do Guarda Florestal) in Santo António de Nordestinho. It is about 7.3 km long and takes around three hours on average. It is rated hard, so bring sturdy shoes with good grip, warm and waterproof clothing, and plenty of water. The path runs through the protected zone, surrounded by native forest, and on a clear day the higher sections open up to wide panoramic views.
How to plan your visit
- Pick a day with a good forecast. Weather in the Azores changes fast, and the summit view depends on how clear the air is.
- Stay on the marked path, since you are inside a nature reserve and a bird protection zone.
- Allow more than three hours in total if you want time for breaks and photos.
- Check the current trail status before setting out, as other approaches to the peak have been closed at times.
