About this place
Pico Branco is a peak on Porto Santo, the small island in Portugal's Madeira archipelago. It rises to roughly 450 metres above sea level, making it the second-highest point on the island, and it lies in the municipality of Vila Baleira. A well-known walking trail leads to the summit, where the reward is a full 360-degree panorama.
Where is Pico Branco?
Porto Santo lies northeast of Madeira and is best known for its long sandy beach. Pico Branco shows another side of the island: volcanic rock, dry slopes and green hills that fall away toward the Atlantic. The area belongs to the Natura 2000 network and holds the island's largest number of well-preserved native plants.
What is the trail to Pico Branco like?
The summit is reached by the PR1 route, the Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã. It is about 2.5 to 2.7 km one way and usually takes around an hour and a half to climb. The ascent can be fairly steep, but the path is well kept, and railings protect the sections where there is a drop. That is why it is considered an easy route, suitable for families with children.
The path was originally made for pack donkeys carrying loads around the island. It begins at Rocha Quebrada, a colourful rock formation that the footpath is partly cut into. Along the way you also pass large prismatic rock structures.
What will you see on the way?
The scenery changes as you climb. The start is dry and arid, then patches of greenery appear, followed by a cypress woodland dominated by Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa). Before that, the route crosses a rock fault near Cabeço do Caranguejo. Look out for endemic vegetation such as dragon trees and laurel shrubs.
Terra Chã and the summit views
The trail links the peak with the Terra Chã viewpoint, where green hills meet the ocean in one of the most dramatic panoramas on the island. From Pico Branco itself the view opens in every direction, so on a clear day you can take in the whole island and the sea around it.
