Perlinkvallei

Sint-Blasius-Boekel, Belgium

About this place

Perlinkvallei is a small nature reserve in the Flemish Ardennes (Vlaamse Ardennen), located in the municipality of Zwalm in East Flanders, Belgium, within the village of Sint-Blasius-Boekel. The roughly four-hectare reserve stretches along a scenic valley on the right bank of the Perlinkbeek stream, also known locally as the Boekelbeek. Further downstream, beyond the reserve itself, the same watercourse changes its name to Moldergembeek and later to Peerdenstokbeek before joining the river Zwalm at Nederzwalm.

What is there to see in Perlinkvallei?

Despite its modest size, the valley packs in a surprising variety of habitats: patches of riparian woodland, small ponds, a hay meadow, and a small orchard. This mosaic of environments is what makes the area so rich in plant and animal life relative to its footprint. The wooded sections along the stream contain pollard willows, while the forest floor and banks support wood anemones, primroses, and wild garlic — species typical of the damp, shaded valleys carved by small streams across the Flemish countryside.

What animals live in the reserve?

The ponds scattered through the valley serve as breeding sites for amphibians. Visitors may come across toads and frogs, along with three different species of salamander — a notable diversity of amphibians for such a compact reserve. Their presence is generally taken as a good sign of clean water and a healthy surrounding habitat, and the ponds themselves form one of the ecological anchors of the valley.

Who manages Perlinkvallei?

The reserve is looked after by Natuurpunt, Flanders' largest nature conservation organisation, through its local branch Natuurpunt Zwalmvallei, which oversees several nature areas along the Zwalm river valley, Perlinkvallei among them. Much of the practical upkeep of the land relies on volunteers from surrounding villages, who take part in regular management work such as mowing the meadow, pollarding the willows, and maintaining the small orchard.

Is Perlinkvallei suitable for a walk with children?

The reserve reflects a "nature on your doorstep" philosophy: it is designed as a place where local children can experience nature hands-on, whether in the woodland, by the pond, in the hay meadow, or among the orchard trees. As a result, it tends to attract families and school groups from the neighbouring villages, even though it remains a modest, intimate corner of the valley rather than a large landscaped nature park.

Can the reserve be visited with a guide?

For visitors who want to explore the heart of the area more thoroughly than a casual walk along the paths allows, guided nature walks can be arranged with an experienced local guide. Such a visit is a good way to learn more about the valley's history, its plant and animal species, and the reasons this particular stretch of landscape came to be protected.
