Pazo de Trasariz

Pazo de Trasariz is a 17th-century Galician manor house in Vimianzo, in the Costa da Morte area of A Coruña province. The estate stands close to Vimianzo's medieval castle, on the road linking Vimianzo with Ponte do Porto, and remains privately owned today.

Who built Pazo de Trasariz?

The manor was founded in the second half of the 17th century by Antonio Caamaño y Quintana, a representative of the House of Altamira who in 1695 held the position of governor over the Altamira family's estates. For generations the property stayed within the Caamaño line, which is why it is also known as Casa Señorial de los Caamaño. In the 19th century ownership passed to the Ardeleiros and Teijeiro families, and in 1880 the estate was acquired by the ancestors of its current owners, who still run it.

What does the building look like?

The main house has a rectangular floor plan and is built from dressed granite ashlar. Its most recognizable feature is a portico of eight arches resting on columns with Doric capitals, topped by a gallery (solana) of Ionic-style columns and a balustrade. Tall chimneys, similar to those found on castle buildings, rise above the roofline. Attached to the main house is a 17th-century Baroque chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Solitude (Nosa Señora da Soidade), its façade bearing the coats of arms of the Caamaño and Villar families. The chapel can be entered both from inside the pazo and directly from outside, and its interior holds an elaborate altarpiece and a carved wooden ceiling.

The estate is privately owned and is not open for general sightseeing. Instead, it operates as a venue for weddings and private events: the chapel is consecrated, so couples can hold a full religious ceremony on the grounds and move directly into a glass-enclosed banquet hall for the reception. The property covers more than 2,000 square meters of gardens, with century-old oak trees, a traditional water mill, and a hórreo, the raised granary typical of Galician farmsteads.
