Pazo de Antequeira

Pazo de Antequeira is a historic Galician manor house tucked among century-old trees in the hamlet of Antequeira, in the parish of Oín, within the municipality of Rois — just a few kilometres from Os Dices, the main town of this district in the province of A Coruña.

What will you see?

The pazo grew out of a house built in the 15th–16th century, later remodelled in the 18th century in a baroque style that gave it the grand appearance it still carries today. The building is arranged in three sections: two projecting side wings flanking a central body topped by a "solana," a covered gallery reached by a stone staircase with a balustrade on the main facade. For generations the estate was linked to the Counts of San Juan, a connection still visible in its architectural details.

Right beside the main house stands a baroque chapel dedicated to San Juan Nepomuceno. Its facade bears a relief of the saint, and the interior is covered by a vaulted ceiling. The chapel underwent a thorough restoration in the late 20th century and is today one of the most photographed corners of the whole estate.

The true highlight of Pazo de Antequeira, though, is its garden. It shelters the largest beech tree in all of Galicia, a centuries-old giant surrounded by local legend. Alongside it grow camellias, magnolias and hydrangeas, plus other ancient trees that together form a dense, shaded grove. The layout of the garden has kept its historic character and is carefully maintained by the current owners.

How to get there?

The pazo lies within the municipality of Rois, close to Os Dices, along a route linked to the network of Way of St James paths in Galicia. Travelling by car is by far the easiest option — from Santiago de Compostela the drive takes little more than half an hour along local provincial roads. There is no large car park nearby, so it's best to leave the car in the centre of Os Dices and cover the last stretch on foot or by bike, taking in the rural scenery of Rois along the way.

When to visit?

Pazo de Antequeira is private property and is not normally open to visitors. From time to time, though, the Rois town council organises guided visits — such openings have taken place as part of local tourism training workshops, giving access to the grounds and the garden. Before planning a trip, it's worth checking with the town hall or the local tourist information point for any scheduled dates.

For the best scenery, spring is ideal, when the camellias and magnolias are in bloom, while summer brings the hydrangeas to their peak. Autumn and winter, by contrast, are the best seasons to appreciate the bare, sweeping crown of the ancient beech tree.
