Parque de María Luisa

Parque de María Luisa is Seville's principal city park, stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir River just southwest of the historic center. It is the main green lung of the city — a place locals use for daily walks and a near-mandatory stop for anyone visiting Seville.

What can you see inside the park?

The park's most famous neighbor is Plaza de España, a monumental semicircular square with a canal, small bridges, and a brick facade lined with ceramic alcoves representing Spain's provinces. Inside the park itself, a dense network of paths runs beneath palm trees, orange trees, and plane trees, connecting fountains, ponds, and small pavilions. A recurring feature throughout the grounds is the colorful ceramic tilework (azulejos) covering benches and low walls — a decorative style found across Seville, but nowhere as concentrated as here. Shaded corners with dense vegetation keep the park noticeably cooler than the open streets in summer, making it a popular refuge from the heat.

Peacocks roam freely along the paths, and pigeons accustomed to visitors gather near the benches. The flat, shaded, traffic-free layout makes the park a comfortable choice for families with children.

How do you get there?

The park is within walking distance of the cathedral and the Santa Cruz district — the walk from the city center typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatives include the Sevici city bike-share system or a short city bus ride, with stops serving the Prado de San Sebastián and Puerta de Jerez area. Given the park's size, entering from the Plaza de España side makes it easiest to get oriented among the paths.

When is the best time to visit?

Seville summers can be very hot, so spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most comfortable conditions, with milder temperatures and the vegetation at its fullest. In July and August, an early morning or evening visit is a better plan than the peak afternoon heat. The park is open to the public every day, free of charge.
