Parque de las Familias

Parque de las Familias, formerly known as Ciudad de los Niños, is one of the largest recreational parks in Almeria and has become a genuine local landmark for families.

The park sits within the city of Almeria in an easily reachable area, so visitors can arrive by car or public transport without much hassle. Covering more than 11,000 square meters — often described as being roughly the size of fifteen football pitches — the park is anchored by the monumental sculpture "Pachamama", surrounded by wide green areas, walking paths and shaded resting spots.

The grounds are divided into four themed play zones. "Almería tierra de cine" pays tribute to the region's cinematic heritage with a climbing wall and film-inspired games. "Parque Natural" draws visitors with a lighthouse-shaped slide and sea-themed attractions. A third zone recreates part of Almeria's Alcazaba fortress, the stronghold overlooking the city, and features four large slides. The fourth zone, "Reciclaje", is designed for the youngest children, with sandboxes, smaller slides and inflatable jump mats.

Beyond the play areas, the park offers picnic spots, barbecue facilities, a kiosk with a terrace, and plenty of benches under the trees — the kind of place where a whole afternoon can easily disappear.

Entry is completely free, making the park accessible to residents, tourists and families alike looking for low-cost entertainment during their stay in Almeria. Given the Mediterranean climate, the best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the hottest hours of the day, especially in summer.

A bit of history

The project began in 2012, when the city decided to build a large green space centered around an ambitious children's playground. The investment, worth around 11 million euros, was split into two phases, with the first — covering the main body of the park — opening to the public in 2014. Recognition came quickly: in 2016, Parque de las Familias was named the best children's playground in Spain.
