Parque de Invierno

Parque de Invierno is the largest park in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, spread across the southern edge of the city. Where does the park come from?

The idea for the park dates back to 1952, when it was first proposed by then-mayor Alonso de Nora, though it took decades before the plan moved forward. The Oviedo City Council formally approved the construction project in 1988, and the park itself opened in 1991. It has been maintained and managed by the city council ever since. Over the following years, additional plots covering more than 40,000 square meters were added to the original grounds, creating three distinct zones: the tunnel area, the old estate area (casona), and the wooded section.

The park's signature feature is a garden laid out as a maze, sitting next to a traditional Asturian farmstead known as a quintana — a stone farmhouse paired with a raised granary called a hórreo. It's one of the few places within Oviedo's city limits where visitors can see this type of rural Asturian architecture without leaving town.

Parque de Invierno is also known for its varied tree cover, including pines, oaks, elms, birches, horse chestnuts, magnolias, and poplars.
