Park pod hvězdami

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Park pod hvězdami ("Park Under the Stars") is a small green space on the slope of Kraví hora hill in Brno's Brno-střed district, right above the Matyáš Lercha Grammar School (Gymnázium Matyáše Lercha). It was built on the site of former allotment gardens, which had been left abandoned and overgrown for years after their sheds were demolished. Today it's a tidy park with an unusual concept: every single plant growing here is edible.

What can you find in the park?

Paved footpaths cross the site, lined with new benches and small pieces of street furniture. Instead of ornamental shrubs, the park was planted with fruit trees, edible bushes and perennials, so the landscape visibly changes with the seasons rather than staying purely decorative. Younger visitors get a couple of dedicated attractions — a rope swing and a climbing frame — while adults can take a seat and enjoy a view stretching toward the Hády quarry, one of the recognizable landmarks on Brno's eastern edge.

Why "under the stars"?

The name points to the park's neighbor at the top of Kraví hora: the Brno Observatory and Planetarium (Hvězdárna a planetárium Brno), which has operated there for decades. The whole hill has long served as a recreational spot for the city — picnics, sports activities and cultural events all take place on its slopes — and the park extends that role into what used to be the hill's neglected lower section.

When was it built?

Construction started in the summer of 2023 and continued through the autumn in the northern part of Kraví hora, where new greenery was also planted. The project cost close to 5 million Czech crowns and was carried out as one of the Brno-střed district's urban greening initiatives.

Who is this park for?

It works well for families looking for a quiet playground with a couple of climbing elements, as well as for local residents who just want to sit in the shade with a view over the hills. Its proximity to the grammar school means students often pass through between classes, and it also lies along the route walkers take when heading up Kraví hora toward the observatory.
