Kadetka

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Kadetka is a small, low-key city park in Brno, spread out at the foot of Kraví hora hill in the Brno-střed district, right along Žižkova street. It's a spot for locals looking for a quiet moment closer to downtown, without the crowds you'd find in Brno's bigger parks.

Where exactly is Kadetka located?

The park sits on a plot at the base of Kraví hora, a hill best known to Brno residents as a viewpoint and the site of the city's planetarium. That makes Kadetka a convenient starting point for a walk up the slope, while also working as a standalone place to rest for anyone not planning a longer hike.

What's the history behind this place?

Before the park existed, this same plot held a former military dining hall and kitchen building. The property passed from the Czech Army to the city of Brno in the 1990s, but it stood empty for years and kept deteriorating. A fire in 2010 made the already run-down building even worse, effectively sealing its fate for demolition. The site — a classic brownfield, meaning disused former industrial or military land inside the urban fabric — was eventually redeveloped, and the park opened to the public in 2021.

What will you find in the park?

Kadetka covers just over 3,000 square meters and was planted with nearly forty new trees, including Norway and sycamore maples along with double-flowered ornamental cherry trees. On top of that, 139 hornbeam shrubs were added, some already over two meters tall at planting time, so the park felt established rather than freshly bare from day one. The grounds include wooden benches and smaller seating, bicycle racks, two outdoor fitness stations, and two public grills — not something you find in every park of this size. Waste bins are placed along the paths as well.

Who is this park for?

Given its intimate scale, Kadetka suits people looking for a short break during the day, families with children living nearby, or Brno-střed residents who'd rather use a local park than travel to the city's larger, busier green spaces. The presence of public grills also makes it a practical choice for a neighborhood get-together or an evening barbecue in the warmer months.

When should you visit?

As an open, free city park, there's no fixed schedule to work around — visit whenever fits your day. Spring and summer show off the plantings best, with the hornbeams and cherry trees in full leaf or bloom giving the place its character, while autumn brings the usual color change of deciduous trees.
