Park aan de Stroom

Park aan de Stroom is one of Antwerp's newest green spaces, opened to residents and visitors on 17 July 2025. It occupies a stretch of the Scheldekaaien, the redeveloped quays on the right (city-side) bank of the river Scheldt, in the Nieuw Zuid district between the Kennedy Tunnel and the southern part of the city. Where a paved, industrial quay surface once stood, a long green corridor now unfolds along the water.

How big is the park?

The park runs for 750 metres along the riverbank and covers 5.5 hectares. City planners deliberately chose this section of the long-running Scheldekaaien redevelopment for greenery, aiming both to give residents a place to relax and to help cool the densely built city centre during hot weather.

What is there to see and do?

The landscape is shaped by rolling, grass-covered hills and flower-rich embankments. Seating platforms are placed along the water, offering views over the Scheldt and the boats passing by. The park also includes a rainwater retention pond, winding walking paths that lead through the whole area, a small orchard, and a dedicated dog-running zone.

The scale of the planting is striking: 426 new native trees and 29,000 shrubs, hedges and aquatic plants have been added. As a result, a stretch of riverside that only a decade and a half ago was a neglected industrial zone is now green and full of life.

How does it fit into the history of this stretch of quay?

Fifteen years ago, the site now occupied by the park looked completely different: it was a derelict industrial area from which used cars were shipped out by cargo vessel, including to Africa. Turning this part of the Scheldekaaien into a park is part of a long-running, wider project to renew Antwerp's riverside, converting former port and industrial land into public space open to residents and visitors alike.
