Parc dels Xiribecs

Parc dels Xiribecs is an urban recreational park in Amposta, a town in Catalonia's Terres de l'Ebre region. Covering roughly 5.2 hectares in the town's south-east, it's one of the most popular green spaces for locals looking for a walk, a run, or a family afternoon outdoors.

What can you see in the park?

The park opened in 2011, designed by architect Pep Salgar, and its layout sets it apart from an ordinary municipal square. At its heart sits an artificial pond about 90 metres across, framed by a walking promenade. The grounds are broken into several distinct zones: an area with pergolas and water channels, grassy "dunes" that form natural mounds for play and rest, a palm-lined avenue, and a quieter corner planted with olive trees and stone-edged paths. That variety means a stroll through the park moves through several clearly different landscapes within a fairly compact area.

What can you do with children?

Xiribecs is above all a favourite family destination thanks to its large children's play area. Since January 2025, the playground has featured a new double zip-line — a project that won the most votes in Amposta's participatory budgeting process, "Tu fas Amposta! 2022–2023." Through the same process, residents also voted for further park upgrades, including a food and drink kiosk currently under construction and accessibility improvements for visitors with reduced mobility. As a result, the park keeps evolving with additions driven directly by the town's own residents.

How do you get to Parc dels Xiribecs?

The park sits in the south-eastern part of Amposta, a town on the Ebro River close to where it meets the Mediterranean. Amposta is well connected by road to Tarragona and Valencia via the AP-7 motorway and the N-340, and the town can also be reached by train via the nearby L'Aldea-Amposta-Tortosa station. Given its size and open layout, the park itself is easy to reach on foot or by bike from most parts of town.

When is the best time to visit?

Because much of the park is open and sun-exposed, spring and autumn tend to be the most pleasant seasons, when temperatures in Terres de l'Ebre are milder than in the height of summer. In summer, the shaded palm avenue and pergolas are best enjoyed in the morning or evening, avoiding the hottest hours. The park is open year-round and free to enter.
