Parc del Viaducte

Parc del Viaducte is a municipal park in Alcoi (Alcoy), in Spain's Alicante province, running along Passeig del Viaducte next to the El Viaducte neighbourhood and the landmark bridge that gives the park its name.

How do you get to Parc del Viaducte?

The park sits on the eastern edge of downtown Alcoi, across the Molinar valley. The easiest approach is on foot from the town centre, either crossing the viaduct itself or following one of the paths down toward the Barranc del Molinar ravine. Alcoi is reached by regional bus from Alicante or Valencia, and the park is only a short walk from there.

What can you see in the park?

The park's main landmark is the railway viaduct visible from its paths, spanning the Molinar river. Built in 1907, it runs about 200 metres long and reaches a maximum height of 54 metres, resting on three pillars. The park itself consists of planted embankments, walking paths and viewpoints over the valley and the El Viaducte neighbourhood, which only grew up after the bridge was built. In 2025 the Alcoi city council completed restoration work on one of the embankments after fire damage, replanting vegetation, renewing the irrigation system, and repairing fences, railings and paved paths, at a cost of over 42,000 euros.

Where does the park's name come from?

The site was previously an informal settlement known locally as "cuesta de las flores" (flower slope), located between the Tossal hill and the viaduct. The park was created under the city's 1989 general urban plan, taking its name directly from the neighbouring bridge.

What's worth knowing about the viaduct itself?

Also called the Canalejas Viaduct, after the member of parliament who represented the Alcoi district, the bridge opened on 24 February 1907. Builders used 325 tonnes of steel, and the structure rests on three pillars and two abutments. The bridge made possible the growth of the El Viaducte neighbourhood on the far side of the valley — today home to over a thousand residents, and site of the former Swedish-Norwegian Hospital building, now a campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València.

When should you visit?

Spring and autumn are the best times, when Alcoi's temperatures are milder than in summer and the embankment planting looks its fullest after seasonal work. In the evening, the lit-up viaduct over the Molinar valley is one of the town's more memorable views.
