Parc del Llac

Parc del Llac is a small but charming landscaped garden in el Masnou, a coastal town in Catalonia located a short distance northeast of Barcelona. The garden was laid out in the early 20th century as part of the Bellresguard estate, the summer residence of Romà Fabra i Puig, marquis of Masnou, and it still preserves the composition typical of French-inspired neoclassical gardens from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

How do you get there?

El Masnou sits on the Rodalies R1 railway line connecting Barcelona with the Maresme coast, so a train ride from the city centre takes roughly 20–25 minutes. The train station is within easy walking distance of the park, and drivers can also reach the town via the C-32 motorway. The park has no gate that closes at night and no fixed opening hours — entry is free around the clock, which makes it a convenient stop on any walk through town.

Spread over about 6,400 square metres, the layout follows the classic pattern of a private residential garden: the centrepiece is a pond with a small island reached by crossing a footbridge. On the opposite side of the grounds lies a section designed in a romantic style, featuring a raised lookout point, a small grotto and an artificial waterfall that together give the park the feel of a picturesque period corner. A distinctive feature of the planting is the abundance of palm trees — up to five different species can be spotted here, which is unusual for this part of Catalonia. The park is also popular with birdwatchers: visitors may come across the white wagtail, reed warbler, magpie, wren, robin and grey heron, and in the evening hear the song of the nightingale.

When should you visit?

Because the park is small and intimate, it works best as a short stop during a longer walk through el Masnou — for example on the way to the nearby Bellresguard viewpoint. Spring and early summer bring the greenest vegetation and the most active birdlife, but thanks to round-the-clock access the park can be visited at any time of day, whether in the quiet of early morning or in the late afternoon, when the light falls nicely on the water and the little bridge over the pond.
