Parc de Diagonal Mar

Parc de Diagonal Mar is one of Barcelona's largest city parks, tucked into the Sant Martí district right along the Mediterranean coast. Built at the turn of the millennium on former industrial land, it now stands as one of the city's clearest examples of contemporary landscape architecture.

Where did this park come from?

Before the park existed, the land here was a rundown industrial site — home to the old Macosa foundry. Redevelopment of this stretch of the city picked up pace ahead of the Forum 2004, a major cultural event that reshaped the eastern edge of Barcelona. The park itself was designed by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue of the EMBT studio, on a project budget of around 36 million euros, and opened to the public in 2002.

Miralles' guiding idea was to physically link the city with the sea: he imagined the park as a tree rising out of the Mediterranean and branching outward into the city's street grid. That concept still shows in the park's flowing, organic pathways and in the way the layout opens toward the coastline.
