Paratge Natural Municipal la Mola de la Vila

El Forcall, Spain

About this place

Paratge Natural Municipal la Mola de la Vila is a protected natural area in the municipality of Forcall, in the province of Castellón, part of the Valencian Community in eastern Spain. Covering nearly 130 hectares, it was granted natural park status by an agreement of the regional government in October 2005. Its name refers to a landform typical of this part of Spain — a "mola," a flat-topped elevation with steep, cliff-like edges.

What does the landscape of Mola de la Vila look like?

The centerpiece of the site is the mountain massif itself, whose highest point reaches nearly 947 metres above sea level, with the overall formation averaging around 920 metres. The flat summit drops abruptly into steep rock faces, creating the dramatic contrast typical of the table-shaped "muelas" scattered across the Los Puertos de Morella area. Perched directly above the point where the Bergantes, Caldes and Cantavieja rivers converge, the mountain offers sweeping views over the Bergantes valley and the rugged terrain that surrounds it.

What plants and animals live in the park?

The vegetation is dominated by holm oak woodland, growing alongside box, Valencian oak, rowan, maple and medlar. In places, stands of Aleppo pine and Corsican pine appear as well, while scattered patches of juniper and savin cling to the rockier sections. This mix of habitats supports a surprisingly rich range of wildlife. Among mammals, the Iberian wild goat stands out, finding ideal terrain among the cliffs and crags. The skies above the Mola are patrolled by several large birds of prey — griffon vultures maintain a significant population here, alongside Bonelli's eagle and the northern goshawk. Amphibians and reptiles recorded in the area include the common toad, the common frog, the horseshoe whip snake and the ocellated lizard, all of them listed as protected species under the Valencian catalogue of threatened fauna.

Why does this place matter to the people of Forcall?

The protection granted to Mola de la Vila rests not only on its ecological value but also on the strong symbolic weight the mountain carries for the local community. Visible from nearly every corner of the town, it serves as a landmark and a point of identity for the wider Els Ports region.

What is known about the history of the site?

Within the park lies the prehistoric rock shelter of Mola de Sant Marc, where archaeologists have recovered flint tools shaped through retouching techniques. These finds point to a human presence in the area dating back to prehistoric times, adding an archaeological dimension to the site's natural and scenic value.
