Paratge Natural Municipal el Rivet

Benassal, Spain

About this place

Paratge Natural Municipal el Rivet is a compact but ecologically significant protected area in the municipality of Benassal, in the province of Castellón, within the Valencian Community. Located roughly 3 km from the town centre at an elevation of nearly 900 metres above sea level, it covers 16 hectares and was formally designated a municipal natural landscape by an agreement of the Generalitat Valenciana government in March 2005.

What makes the woodland at el Rivet special?

At the heart of the reserve stands a mature Mediterranean forest dominated by Portuguese oaks and kermes oaks, with a dense understorey of shrubs beneath the canopy. It is considered one of the best-preserved remnants of Valencian oak woodland, a habitat that once spread across much of the region but now survives only in a handful of isolated pockets. Three of the oaks growing here have been listed in the Catalogue of Monumental and Singular Trees of the Valencian Community, a recognition of their age and ecological value.

Why is this site significant for botanists?

A flora micro-reserve has been established within the boundaries of el Rivet, protecting plant species that are locally rare, including wild orchids and scabious. To help visitors engage with this diversity, an educational nature trail known as the Itinerario Botánico has been laid out and clearly signposted, used both by school groups and independent travellers interested in the local plant life without requiring specialist knowledge.

What views does el Rivet offer?

Sitting at close to 900 metres, the area opens onto wide panoramas over the Maestrazgo mountains, a landscape shaped by limestone plateaus, ravines and gullies through which small watercourses feed the surrounding ecosystem. The contrast between this dry, rocky terrain and the shaded, humid interior of the forest creates a microclimate that supports a surprisingly rich variety of species for such a small protected area.

What can visitors do at the recreational area?

Beyond its natural value, el Rivet also functions as a traditional gathering spot for residents of Benassal and nearby villages. The recreational zone includes paella-cooking stations, a swimming pool, picnic tables, a camping area, tennis courts and a small café. This combination of a protected nature reserve with a long-standing community leisure spot gives the site a distinctive character, allowing visitors to observe local flora and spend a relaxed day outdoors in the same visit.
