About this place
Palácio José do Canto is a heritage residence in Ponta Delgada, the main city of São Miguel in the Azores, listed as a cultural heritage monument of Portugal. It stands beside the José do Canto Botanical Garden, long one of the best-known green spaces in the city. Together, palace and garden form a historic ensemble tied to one man and one family.
Who was José do Canto?
José do Canto (1820–1898) was an influential Azorean landowner, scientist and philanthropist. He was known for his passion for agriculture and botany and for his commitment to the development of the Azores. Both the residence and the neighbouring garden carry his name.
How did the garden come about?
The garden was begun in the 19th century, in 1845, on land belonging to José do Canto's wife, Maria Guilhermina Taveira Brum da Silveira. The plan for the grounds was imported from London, so the result is an example of a Victorian landscape park, with manicured lawns, paths and a wealth of plant species.
What made the plant collection special?
Throughout his life the owner kept in touch with botanical gardens and plant nurseries around the world, buying, selling and exchanging specimens. That is how species from many continents ended up on the island. The German botanist Edmond Goeze judged that the garden was unquestionably the richest of all on the island, probably holding more than 3,000 species.
What architectural style is the palace?
The building is described as one of the most significant works in the Palladian style on São Miguel, and among the largest of its kind on the island. Its ordered, classical architecture sits comfortably within the landscaped character of the garden.
Can you visit?
The José do Canto garden has been open to the public since August 2014. The residence itself is a private matter, so it is worth checking current access rules before you go. The garden makes a calm stop during a day of sightseeing in Ponta Delgada.
