About this place
Palácio de Vila Flor is an 18th-century Baroque palace in the heart of Guimarães, in northern Portugal. Today it is one of the city's most interesting landmarks and part of a cultural complex that pairs a former noble residence with a modern performing arts centre.
Who built Vila Flor Palace?
The residence was raised in the 18th century for the nobleman Tadeu Luís António Lopes de Carvalho da Fonseca e Camões. It stood within the Quinta de Vila Flor estate and was meant to display its owner's standing. The facade is decorated with granite statues of Portugal's first kings, a fitting touch in Guimarães, often called the cradle of the Portuguese nation.
How did ownership change?
Over the following centuries the palace changed hands several times. The Counts of Arrochela family owned it and hosted Queen Maria II when she visited Guimarães, the occasion when it rose from town to city status. In the later 19th century the property belonged to António de Moura Soares Veloso, who was involved in building the railway between Porto and Guimarães. In 1884 the palace hosted the first Industrial and Commercial Exhibition of Guimarães. A later owner, the industrialist Bernardino Jordão, brought the town its first electric lighting. In the 1970s the municipality of Guimarães bought the building.
What is there to see in the gardens?
Behind the palace, along the north facade, a terraced garden unfolds over three levels linked by stairways. Its box-edged parterres have survived and are typical of noble gardens of the period. Ornamental pools, fountains, balustrades and tilework decorate the grounds, while camellias and rhododendrons flourish. The terraces offer good views over Guimarães, making them a pleasant spot for a quiet stroll after exploring the old town.
Centro Cultural Vila Flor
Next to the palace stands the Centro Cultural Vila Flor, a modern building with two auditoriums. It stages theatre and concerts, from classical music to contemporary rock and pop. The city council chose to restore the palace and gardens thoroughly and to build the cultural centre from scratch; the works were completed in 2005. The complex played an important role in 2012, when Guimarães was European Capital of Culture.
