Palácio da Rosa

About this place

Palácio da Rosa is a historic urban palace in Lisbon, standing on Largo da Rosa in the Mouraria district, one of the oldest parts of the city. It is not a ticketed headline attraction; it suits travellers who enjoy Lisbon's aristocratic architecture and like hunting for traces of history in side streets.

Where is Palácio da Rosa?

The palace is in Lisbon, in the Lisbon District, in the Mouraria area on the small Largo da Rosa square. Its coordinates are roughly 38.7147° N, 9.1350° W, right in the historic centre and close to the church of São Lourenço. It makes a good stop on a walk through the narrow lanes of old Lisbon.

What is the history of the palace?

The building goes back to the 16th century, when a noble house here belonged to Luís de Brito Nogueira, lord of the estates of São Lourenço in Lisbon and Santo Estevão in Beja. The origin date of the original urban palace, however, is recorded as unknown.

Through marriage the property passed to the house of the Viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira and the Marquises of Ponte de Lima. In the 18th century the palace underwent a deep architectural intervention, described as a near-total remodelling and reconstruction. It was carried out at the expense of Xavier de Lima, an ancestor of the Viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira. The 1755 earthquake had nearly destroyed the building, and the rebuilding followed it.

Later, again through marriage, the palace came to the Marquises of Castelo Melhor. It stayed in family hands until the Lisbon City Council acquired it.

What is worth seeing?

The most distinctive feature is the Baroque noble portal bearing the coat of arms of the Viscounts of Vila Nova de Cerveira and the Marquises of Ponte de Lima, the former owners. The arms are a tangible reminder of the families who shaped this corner of the city.

What was the palace used for after the city took over?

After its acquisition by Lisbon's authorities, the building housed various cultural facilities. These included the Olisiponenses Studies Cabinet, devoted to the history of Lisbon, and the Portuguese Academy of History.

What period is the current building from? Mostly the 18th-century reconstruction that followed the 1755 earthquake, built on an older 16th-century noble residence.

Can I visit the interior? Opening hours and access depend on how the building is being used, so check current information with local cultural institutions before you go. The Baroque portal can be admired from the street.

Tips for visitors

Mouraria is best explored on foot, as the streets are steep and narrow. The palace fits into a walk linking the church of São Lourenço, surrounding lanes and viewpoints. Wear comfortable shoes and leave time to pause at the coat of arms above the portal before heading on toward central Lisbon.
