About this place
Palácio da Quinta das Torres is a Renaissance manor house in the municipality of Setúbal, on the EN10 road between Vila Fresca and Vila Nogueira de Azeitão. It is regarded as one of the most important and beautiful Renaissance architectural complexes in Portugal.
Where is the palace?
The palace stands in the Azeitão area, within the municipality of Setúbal in Setúbal District. Its coordinates are roughly 38.52° N, 9.01° W. Sitting right by the EN10, which links Vila Fresca with Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, it is easy to reach by car when exploring the surroundings.
How old is it?
The complex dates to around 1560. Some accounts suggest the house was built in the 1580s, when D. Diogo d'Eça held it. He received the estate by inheritance from his aunt, D. Filipa da Silva, who had set it up as an entailed estate, a morgado, meaning a property that had to pass undivided within the family.
A history of owners
The entailed estate that included Quinta das Torres was founded in the 15th century by Rui Gomes da Grã. In 1520 the property belonged to D. Brites de Lara, Marchioness of Vila Real, who gave it, still without any building, as a wedding gift to D. Maria da Silva and her husband, D. Pedro.
In the 18th century the estate passed to the Saldanha da Gama family, including João de Saldanha da Gama (1674–1752), the 41st viceroy of India. It later went to a nephew, Miguel António de Melo de Abreu Soares de Brito Barbosa Palha Vasconcelos Guedes, who became the first Count of Murça.
What makes the architecture distinctive?
The house reflects Renaissance taste. Its plan is symmetrical and centred, which shapes the whole layout of the building. The name comes from the towers at its corners; torres is Portuguese for "towers".
Heritage protection
Since 1996 the palace has held the status of a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público). The heritage register lists it together with the adjoining water tank and other elements of the complex.
