Palacete Mendonça

About this place

Palacete Mendonça is an eclectic mansion in Lisbon, designed at the turn of the 20th century by the architect Ventura Terra. It is regarded as one of the most important works of eclectic architecture in Portugal and won the Prémio Valmor in 1909.

Where is Palacete Mendonça?

The building stands on Rua Marquês de Fronteira, in the former parish of São Sebastião da Pedreira, now part of Lisbon's Avenidas Novas district. Its coordinates are roughly 38.7325 N, 9.1559 W. This is the modern, 19th and 20th century side of the city, far from the medieval lanes of Alfama.

Who built it, and why?

The design dates from 1900 to 1902 and was commissioned by Henrique José Monteiro de Mendonça (1864–1942), a businessman who made his fortune growing coffee in São Tomé and Príncipe. Construction ran from 1900 to 1909. Ventura Terra, one of Portugal's leading architects of his day, was the author. Scholars even discuss two distinct projects for the house, from 1900 and 1902.

What does the building look like?

The mansion is classical in character with Italian influences. Three parts are visible from outside: a larger central block and two side wings that housed a dining room and a winter garden. The façade is strongly symmetrical, and its highlight is a loggia in the tradition of Italian Renaissance villas.

What is inside?

The interiors were planned on a grand scale. The entrance hall and the ceremonial staircases stand out. Artists including Bordalo Pinheiro and Pereira Cão were brought in to work on the decorative arts.

The building's later history

The Mendonça family lived here until the 1950s, and their descendants kept the property until the 1980s. In 1990 it passed to the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2016 it was sold for 12 million euros to the Ismaili Imamat, the Ismaili community.
