Palace of Rial

Pazo O Rial (Palace of Rial) is a Baroque palace standing in Vilaxoán, a coastal village just south of the center of Vilagarcía de Arousa, in the Galician province of Pontevedra. The building holds protected cultural heritage status while also operating as a four-star hotel, making it one of the rare places in the Rías Baixas region where visitors can actually stay overnight inside a centuries-old pazo.

Where did this building come from?

The pazo was built in 1696 on the initiative of Juan Antonio Mariño de Lobeira, the last owner of the nearby Lobeira fortress and tower. Its granite blocks were taken directly from that stronghold, which had been destroyed and abandoned after attacks between 1466 and 1469 during the Irmandiño uprising, a peasant revolt against the local nobility. In effect, stone once meant for defense was given a second life as a noble residence.

The estate's later history is tied to the Caamaño family, founders of Vilagarcía: a descendant of the original builder, Pedro Mariño, married Clara de Caamaño, granddaughter of García de Caamaño. In 1855, following an inheritance dispute over the Rubiáns estate, Pazo O Rial passed to the Ozores family, who also descended from the Caamaño line. The property fell into decline from the early 20th century onward and stood abandoned until the 1970s, when it was sold and converted into a hotel.
