Paço dos Ribafrias

Sintra (Santa Maria e São Miguel, São Martinho e São Pedro de Penaferrim), Portugal

About this place

Paço dos Ribafrias is a Renaissance manor in the historic centre of Sintra, Portugal, built in the 16th century and regarded as one of the finest examples of architecture from that period in the town. It is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, a property of public interest.

Who built Paço dos Ribafrias?

Construction was commissioned in 1534 by Gaspar Gonçalves, who served under King Manuel I as Porteiro-Mor, the chief doorkeeper of the royal household. He was also Morgado de Ribafria and Alcaide-Mor of Sintra, the senior governor of the town's castle. Sources stress that he came from humble origins, and his career at court allowed him to raise an imposing family seat. The design is attributed to Pero Pexão.

What does the palace look like?

The building blends Italian Renaissance influences with late Gothic in its Manueline form, the Portuguese style of the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is arranged as three rectangular volumes laid out in a U shape. The complex includes a manor house (casa senhorial) and a private chapel, all surrounded by extensive gardens.

It stands out in Sintra: it is the only private noble residence in the town proper, the Vila de Sintra, that still keeps its 16th-century structure. Sintra is best known for romantic palaces and medieval fortifications, so Paço dos Ribafrias shows an earlier and different chapter of local architecture.

The link to the Marquis of Pombal

In 1727 the estate was bought by Paulo de Carvalho Ataíde, who left it to his nephew Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Count of Oeiras and later known as the Marquis of Pombal. During his time the building was improved and modernised. New elements were added to the Renaissance structure, including sash windows (janelas de guilhotina). For this reason the property is also referred to as Casa dos Ribafrias or Casa Pombal.

Today and the future

The manor has moved into public hands: the CulturSintra Foundation signed its purchase for 5.5 million euros. The acquisition is meant to protect Sintra's heritage, and the municipality links it to safeguarding the historic ensemble in the town centre.
