Paço da Glória, constituído pelo edifício principal, capela, construção anexa e portal

Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal

About this place

Paço da Glória is an eighteenth-century manor house (Portuguese solar) in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, in northern Portugal. It stands in Jolda Madalena, today part of the parish of Jolda (Madalena) and Rio Cabrão. Since 2012 it has held the status of Monument of Public Interest (Monumento de Interesse Público). The official name covers a whole ensemble: the main building, the chapel, an annex and a monumental entrance portal.

What is the history of Paço da Glória?

The story of the site goes back to the early sixteenth century. In 1515 King Manuel I granted the lands to Martim Fernandes Vilarinho, who built a defensive tower on a hill overlooking the scenic valley of the Lima River. The tower guarded the surroundings and marked the beginning of a family seat.

In the eighteenth century the estate was rebuilt by Francisco de Araújo e Amorim. He had made a large fortune in Brazil and invested it in a new, showy residence. This was a common path in northern Portugal at the time, when entrepreneurs returning from Brazil built impressive houses in their home regions.

Where does the name come from?

The name comes from the manor's chapel, founded in 1737 and dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Glória (Our Lady of Glory). The whole estate took its name from that dedication.

What is there to see?

The eighteenth-century building is Baroque in style, with some twentieth-century extravagances that give the ensemble its individual character. The entrance to the grounds is a portal set into a wall crowned with merlons. This detail gives the boundary a defensive look and recalls the medieval tower where it all began.

The heritage listing covers the four elements named in its official title: the main building, the chapel, the annex and the portal. Protection therefore applies to the whole complex, not just the house itself.

Can you visit Paço da Glória?

Not in the traditional sense. The manor currently operates as a heritage tourism lodging (Turismo de Habitação), so it is not open to visitors as a museum. Anyone hoping to see the interiors could consider booking a stay. Before planning a trip, check the current rules with the owner or the local tourist office.
