About this place
Østfoldbadet is an indoor water park in Askim, in south-eastern Norway, within Indre Østfold municipality. It officially opened on 16 December 2000 and has served families looking for play in the water, as well as swimmers and people who simply want a sauna and some quiet time. It is one of the main recreation venues in the Østfold region.
What is this place and how did it come about?
Construction began on 31 August 1999 and finished in December 2000, so the whole complex went up in a little over a year. It stands in the middle of Askim, which makes it easy to combine a swim with a short walk around town. Askim is a small town on the Glomma river, roughly 40 kilometres south-east of Oslo, and the nearby railway station on the Østfoldbanen line makes the trip possible without a car.
Which pools and attractions can you expect?
The complex holds more than a dozen water areas. There are two 25-metre competition pools, a wave pool with waves of about 80 centimetres, and a current channel described as one of the most intense in Norway. Thrill seekers get three water slides measuring 30, 62 and 76 metres. A climbing wall is installed in one of the pools, and there is also a diving tower.
The relaxation side includes two pools heated to 34 degrees, therapy pools, a jacuzzi, saunas and a steam room. An outdoor massage pool sits on the roof, and in summer two outdoor pools open to guests.
Is it a good place for children?
Yes. Little ones have their own children's pool, while the wave pool and the slides suit older kids and teenagers. The venue also offers birthday packages, so it is a popular choice for children's parties.
Where can you eat, and what else is there?
A cafeteria on site serves food after your swim. There is also a gym, so some visitors combine a workout with their time in the water.
What should you know before you go?
Visitor reviews are mixed: some mention that the slides are sometimes closed and that cleaning could be better. It is worth checking which attractions are running before you travel.
