Verdensparken

Oslo, Norway

About this place

Verdensparken is a 5.2-hectare park in the Furuset district on the eastern side of Oslo, Norway. It opened in 2013 and was completed in 2014. The name means "the World Park" in Norwegian, and it fits: the park was created as a green space for one of the capital's most diverse communities.

Why is it called the World Park?

Furuset is among the most multicultural parts of Oslo. In 2009, 63% of residents had an ethnic background other than Norwegian, with newcomers arriving from around 140 countries. The park was designed to reflect that mix and to serve as a shared meeting place for people of many origins, languages and traditions.

What can you do here?

The city describes Verdensparken as a small oasis for socialising, exercise, play and new experiences. You will find:

  • seven gathering spots with seating groups, grills and large fire pits, ideal for a family picnic or an evening with friends,
  • a pond and a small stream running through the middle of the park,
  • a lit area, so the park remains usable after dark,
  • a fruit and berry garden on the south side,
  • a large play landscape with equipment meant for both summer and winter.

Parkour in Verdensparken

Movement fans will want to know about the parkour area. According to the city, it is Norway's first facility of its kind, completed in 2012. It is open to everyone and free to use, so beginners and experienced traceurs alike can train without paying.

Who is it for?

Verdensparken suits families with children who will enjoy a playground that works in every season, people looking for a place to grill in the city, and urban sports enthusiasts. It is also an interesting stop for anyone curious about how public space design can support integration in a diverse neighbourhood. It is not a classic tourist sight, but it shows an everyday side of Oslo far from the city centre and waterfront.

Getting there

The easiest way is to take the metro to Furuset station. Alternatively, take a bus to the Gransletta stop. The district lies on the eastern edge of the city, a short public-transport ride from the centre.
