Ospitale is a small but distinctive landmark in Ekai (Ecay de Lónguida), a village that belongs to the municipality of Lónguida / Longida in Navarre, northern Spain. The name recalls a medieval pilgrim hospital that once operated here, and today it is best known through the stone granary known as Casa Ospitale (in Basque, Ospitale etxeko garaia).

The main attraction is the hórreo: a two-storey stone building with a gabled roof and a rectangular floor plan, built next to the prominent house known as Juan de Ecay's home. Granaries of this kind were used to store grain and are a rare, well-preserved example of Navarrese rural architecture. The structure has been restored, so visitors can now examine the original stonework up close.

It's also worth stopping at the Church of San Martín, which dominates the village skyline. This modest, single-nave church is covered by a barrel vault and holds 14th-century Franco-Gothic murals depicting episodes from the life of Saint Martin. Side chapels and a sacristy were added to the original structure at a later date.

Where does the name Ospitale come from?

The name is no coincidence. Historical records — including a 1058 donation to the Monastery of Leyre — place this area within the network supporting pilgrims heading to Roncesvalles. Ekai and the surrounding villages lay along one of the approach routes to the Camino de Santiago, and a local hospital-shelter (eliza-ospitale) served travellers passing through. That history survives directly in the name Casa Ospitale.

When is the best time to visit?

The Lónguida valley has a mountain-influenced, temperate climate, with cooler winters and mild summers. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September–October) are the most pleasant seasons for a visit, when temperatures are comfortable and the surrounding hills — covered in scrubland and poplar groves — look their best. Summers can get hot, and winter rain can make valley roads harder to navigate.

Ekai is home to only a few dozen residents, so it's best visited as part of a wider tour of the Lónguida valley, combined with nearby villages such as Aoiz or Villaveta.
