Osma Castle

Osma Castle rises on a hilltop above El Burgo de Osma-Ciudad de Osma, in Soria province, Castile and León, between the valleys of the Ucero and Abión rivers, roughly a kilometre from the town center.

How do you get there?

The fortress sits on high ground visible from the valley below, reached via the local SO-160 and SO-180 roads that connect El Burgo de Osma with neighboring villages. A footpath climbs from the town center to the summit in a matter of minutes, and the reward is a sweeping view over the valley and the town's cathedral. The castle stands right next to the remains of the Roman city of Uxama Argaela, so the two sites are easy to combine in a single outing.

Osma Castle was built between the 10th and 11th centuries on the foundations of the earlier Celtiberian settlement of Uxama-Argelae, and took its final shape through 14th- and 15th-century rebuilding, when Christian rulers raised the walls that still enclose it today. The fortress is laid out as three irregular defensive rings that follow the shape of the hill, a design that let defenders fall back in stages toward the higher ground. The inner ring survives best, with a tall curtain wall and an entrance gate still standing. Two towers rise on the eastern side, among them the distinctive Tower of Homage, while a separate Water Tower guards the base of the hill by the Ucero river. Builders used cut stone alongside reused Roman material — blocks, cornices and columns lifted from earlier structures and set back into the castle walls. Between 2016 and 2020 the site underwent consolidation and restoration work, and the ruins now stand more stable, with information panels and walkways added along the visitor route to help make sense of the layout.

When should you visit?

Given the exposed hilltop position and the lack of any covered areas, a dry day is the safest choice, when the paths up the hill are secure underfoot and the views from the walls are clearest. Morning and late-afternoon light suit photographs of the valley and the nearby cathedral best, and visiting outside peak hours leaves the ruins quieter to explore.
