Openluchtmuseum Bachten de Kupe

About this place

Openluchtmuseum Bachten de Kupe is an open-air museum in Izenberge, a village in the municipality of Alveringem in West Flanders, Belgium. Sometimes nicknamed the "little Bokrijk" after the much larger and better-known open-air museum in Limburg, it recreates rural life in the historic Bachten de Kupe area of West Flanders.

How did this museum come to be?

The museum's roots go back to 1958, when a regional heritage circle called Bachten de Kupe was founded with the goal of preserving traces of the area's past. In the decades following the war, rapid modernisation of rural life meant that many old buildings, tools and everyday objects were disappearing quickly, and the founders set out to collect and safeguard them. It wasn't until 1971 that construction of the museum site itself began, giving the growing collection of buildings and artefacts a permanent home in Izenberge.

What can visitors see on site?

The museum brings together 46 authentic buildings and thousands of objects that together recreate the picture of a bygone Flemish village. Visitors walk along cobblestone streets, pass a village square and an old inn, and stroll down a full shopping street lined with individual shops: a shoemaker, a tobacco shop, a barber, a butcher and a doctor's office set up in period style. The oldest surviving buildings on the site date back to 1650, making them among the oldest architectural exhibits of their kind in the region.

The layout is designed to feel like a walk through a small town from decades past — each building is furnished and equipped to reflect the era in which it was built or used. This lets visitors trace how everyday life changed for the people of West Flanders, from the work of craftsmen and shopkeepers to trade and medical care.

Is the museum accessible for wheelchair users?

A large part of the site has recently been repaved, making most of the museum accessible to visitors using wheelchairs. This is a notable improvement given that open-air museums like this one are built around historic, often uneven surfaces by nature.
