Museum George Grard

Koksijde, Belgium

About this place

Museum George Grard is an art venue dedicated to sculptor George Grard, housed within the historic Ten Bogaerde estate in Sint-Idesbald, part of Koksijde on the Belgian coast. It brings together a former monastic farmstead and monumental 20th-century sculpture, offering visitors a near-complete overview of the work of one of Belgium's most important sculptors.

Who was George Grard?

George Grard was born in 1901 in Tournai and lived and worked in Sint-Idesbald from 1931 until his death in 1984. He is regarded as one of the greatest Belgian sculptors and as the founder of the so-called School of Sint-Idesbald, a group of artists associated with this seaside village. His work is dominated by monumental, feminine sculptural forms, most often cast in bronze.

How did the collection and museum come about?

The first museum dedicated to the artist opened in 1996 in Alveringem (Gijverinkhove), on the initiative of the artist's widow, Francine van Mieghem, together with the George Grard Foundation. That institution was forced to close in 2009. A year later, in 2010, the Foundation donated the majority of the collection to the municipality of Koksijde with the intention of establishing a new museum there. In 2016 the municipality signed a loan agreement with the Foundation, under which Grard's original plaster models, monumental bronze sculptures and pen drawings went on permanent display in and around Ten Bogaerde.

What is Ten Bogaerde and the Kunstencentrum Ten Bogaerde?

Ten Bogaerde is a former outlying farmstead that once belonged to the Dunes Abbey (Duinenabdij), located in the artists' village of Sint-Idesbald. Between 2014 and 2016, a large barn on the estate was converted into the Kunstencentrum Ten Bogaerde (Ten Bogaerde Arts Centre), designed by the architecture firm Govaert & Vanhoutte. It is here, where historic farm buildings meet a contemporary interior layout, that the Grard collection is presented.

What can visitors see inside the museum?

The display covers the full range of George Grard's sculptural output: works in bronze, terracotta and plaster, alongside numerous drawings, design sketches, film fragments and the artist's archive. The original plaster models and monumental bronze casts form the core of the permanent exhibition. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that pair Grard's work with pieces by contemporary artists, offering fresh perspectives on his sculpture.

Is the sculpture garden worth a visit?

Yes — in the calm, medieval-style garden grounds of Ten Bogaerde, nine monumental sculptures by Grard are on permanent display outdoors. Walking among them, surrounded by the historic farm buildings, is one of the highlights of a visit and lets visitors appreciate the scale and expressive power of his work in natural daylight.
