Opeka Arboretum

Opeka Arboretum sits near the village of Marčan, in the Vinica municipality of northern Croatia, close to the Slovenian border. Spread across roughly 65 hectares around a former Bombelles family estate, it is recognized as the largest arboretum in the country, ahead of Trsteno in Dalmatia and Lisičine near Voćin.

How did the arboretum come to be?

The park was established in 1860 by Count Marko Bombelles, an avid traveler who collected seeds and cuttings of exotic plants on his journeys and brought them back to expand his estate. Over the following decades the collection grew into something closer to a scientific garden than a purely decorative park. The Bombelles family retained the property until 1945, when it passed into state ownership under Yugoslavia. Two years later, in 1947, the arboretum was declared a protected natural feature. Today it is managed by the local agricultural and veterinary school, which explains the ongoing plantings and the careful upkeep of the collection.
