About this place
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboortekerk is the parish church of Hoevenen, a village belonging to the municipality of Stabroek in the Belgian province of Antwerp. Standing at Frans Oomsplein 9, it has served as the main place of worship for this small community north of the city of Antwerp for more than half a century.
What does the current church look like?
The building visitors see in Hoevenen today was constructed between 1971 and 1972, designed by architect Albert Van den Bergh. The church was built in the style of post-war modernism, using concrete and brick as its principal construction materials. This kind of architecture was common for many churches erected across Belgium and the Netherlands during the second half of the twentieth century — simple geometric volumes, unadorned facades, and functional interior layouts suited to the needs of post-war parish communities. The new church was consecrated on 9 September 1972, formally marking the completion of construction and its handover to the faithful.
Why was a new church built here?
The history of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Geboorte parish in Hoevenen reaches back much further than the 1970s. Before the current building existed, the parish church function was fulfilled by a church in nearby Attenhoven, also dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That earlier building, located on Kerkstraat, featured a tower dating from the 13th century and a nave from the 15th century — elements with a considerably longer history than the modern structure in Hoevenen. Over time, however, the condition of the Attenhoven church deteriorated significantly, and an additional problem was its location: the building did not stand centrally within the village, making it inconvenient for residents to reach for daily use. These two factors — the poor state of preservation and the inconvenient location — led the parish to decide on constructing an entirely new church closer to the center of Hoevenen. This is how the present-day church came to be built in 1972, taking over the role as the parish's religious and community center.
Where exactly is the church located?
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Geboortekerk stands in the village of Hoevenen, part of the municipality of Stabroek in the province of Antwerp. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 51.3027°N, 4.39569°E, placing it within the belt of villages stretching north of the city of Antwerp toward the Dutch border. This region is characterized by the settlement pattern typical of northern Belgium — small villages and towns clustered around local parish churches, which have for centuries served as centers of social and religious life.
Frequently asked questions
When was the current church building constructed? The present church in Hoevenen was built between 1971 and 1972 and was consecrated in September 1972, making it a relatively young religious building representing modernist architecture.
Was there an earlier church under the same dedication in Hoevenen? Yes. An earlier parish church dedicated to the same patron stood in Attenhoven and combined elements from the 13th century (the tower) and the 15th century (the nave), before falling into poor structural condition.
Why was a new church built instead of restoring the old one? Two factors were decisive: the deteriorating condition of the older building in Attenhoven and its location away from the village center, which prompted the parish to erect a new church closer to residents.
Who designed the current church? The 1971–1972 building was designed by architect Albert Van den Bergh, using the combination of concrete and brick typical of the period.
