Oberer Schafteich Reuth

Reuth, Czechia

About this place

Oberer Schafteich Reuth is a small but ecologically significant pond west of Reuth, a district of the municipality of Neumark in the Vogtlandkreis district of Saxony, right on the border with Thuringia. Covering just 1.038 hectares, its conservation value far outweighs its modest size. The pond is a surviving fragment of a historically important network of fish ponds known as the "Reuther Teichanlage," a system that shaped this part of the Vogtland region for centuries.

Where exactly is this pond located?

Oberer Schafteich sits directly next to the larger and better-known Waschteich Reuth, with which it forms a single connected natural area. The whole surroundings lie within the catchment of the Aubach, a right-bank tributary of the Weiße Elster, which explains the abundance of wetland and open-water habitats packed into such a small space. The area borders Thuringia, and the county roads K 7803 and K 7817 run nearby, providing the easiest access to the surrounding countryside.

What protection status does the site have?

Oberer Schafteich was designated a landscape natural monument (Flächennaturdenkmal) in 1982. That protection predates and is legally distinct from the safeguarding of the neighboring Waschteich Reuth, which was declared a nature reserve (NSG No. C 03) only in 1995 and added to the EU's Natura 2000 network as an FFH site in 2011. Today both ponds operate as part of one coherent protected system, covering roughly 21.2 hectares of reserve area in total, of which the FFH-designated zone accounts for about 16 hectares.

What can visitors expect to see?

Although Oberer Schafteich itself is tiny, it fits into a landscape typical of this type of historic fish pond in the Vogtland: naturally shaped water bodies fringed by reed and sedge vegetation, surrounded by meadows ranging from damp to genuinely wet. Around the larger Waschteich nearby, an extensive fringe zone with floating-leaved plants has developed, while further from the water the terrain rises into lime-loving oak-hornbeam woodland with a herb layer typical of nutrient-rich, calcareous soils. This mosaic of open water, reed beds, wet meadow, and deciduous forest makes the Oberer Schafteich area an important node for local biodiversity.

Why does this small pond matter for conservation?

Historic fish-farming ponds like those at Reuth often become valuable refuges for waterfowl, amphibians, and marsh vegetation once intensive fish farming winds down, and that is exactly the role this pond complex plays today. The local NABU conservation group is actively involved in stewarding the wider Waschteich-Reuth area, which points to a living, community-driven dimension of protection here that goes beyond the formal legal designation alone.
