Oasis Park

Oasis Park — now officially branded Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura — is a zoo and botanical park in La Lajita, in the municipality of Pájara on the southern coast of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. It is one of the largest theme parks in the archipelago and by far the island's best-known wildlife attraction.

What is this place?

The park covers roughly 800,000 m² and is home to more than 3,000 animals from around 250 species. It started life in 1985 as a small garden centre selling plants sourced from around the world, and gradually expanded into today's mix of zoo, botanical garden and themed areas modelled on the African savannah. The grounds hold Europe's largest camel reserve and one of the continent's largest cactus collections. Oasis Park is also the only zoo in the Canary Islands where visitors can see hippopotamuses and African elephants.

The daily programme is built around keeper-led educational shows: birds of prey, parrots, sea lions and reptiles all get their own sessions. The park markets itself as the only place in the Canary Islands offering an interactive snake and crocodile show, where visitors can touch reptiles and amphibians under staff supervision. A separate lemur enclosure lets guests walk in among the animals for close-up viewing, and there's a savannah-style area that can be toured to see larger African species roaming more open ground. Plant lovers should not skip the botanical garden's cactus and succulent collection.

How do you get there?

Oasis Park sits on the main road to Jandía (Carretera General de Jandía) in La Lajita, about 80 km — roughly an hour's drive — from Corralejo in the north of the island, and around 30 minutes from Morro Jable in the south. Visitors without a car can use the park's free shuttle bus service, which picks up from major hotels across the island on varying schedules depending on location, so it's worth checking times in advance. Free parking is available on site for cars, motorbikes and bicycles.

When should you visit?

The park is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 18:00, and closed on Mondays. Given the size of the grounds and the number of scheduled shows, it's worth setting aside at least half a day. Tickets are valid for a single day and come in several age and resident-pricing categories for Canary Islands residents.
