Oasi Bosco di San Silvestro

Oasi Bosco di San Silvestro is a forest nature reserve in Caserta, in the Campania region, managed by WWF Italy since 1993. Covering roughly 76 hectares across two hills — Montemaiuolo and Montebriano — it was the first WWF oasis ever established in Caserta province.

The oasis protects a Mediterranean evergreen forest dominated by holm oak (Quercus ilex), interwoven with dense Mediterranean scrubland. Resident wildlife includes foxes, hedgehogs, weasels, dormice, and hazel dormice — species typical of central Italian woodland. A stream rising from the hills feeds the cascades and fountains of the celebrated palace park of the Reggia di Caserta, designed by architect Luigi Vanvitelli.

Why does this place matter historically?

The San Silvestro estate once belonged to the "Reali Delizie" — the network of Bourbon royal leisure residences that also included San Leucio, the Vanvitelli Park, and the English Garden of the Reggia di Caserta. In 1993 WWF took over management of the entire site from Italy's Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Finance, and the oasis officially opened to visitors on April 10, 1994.
