Neštětická hora

Neveklov, Czechia

About this place

Neštětická Hora is a modest, forested hill above the town of Neveklov, in the Benešov district of central Bohemia, Czech Republic. Rising to 534 metres above sea level, it's the highest point in the Neveklov area and in this part of the Posázaví region. The hill sits within the cadastral territory of Neštětice, between the villages of Chvojínek, Neštětice and Černíkovice, roughly four kilometres northeast of Neveklov's town centre.

What's on top of the hill?

The summit is crowned by a distinctive lookout tower - a concrete structure with an asymmetrical shape and a semicircular gallery. It stands about 16 metres tall, with a viewing platform reached by 48 steps at a height of 12 metres. From up there you get a partial view over the wooded Posázaví countryside, though the surrounding trees block a full panorama. The tower is freely accessible today, but it receives no regular maintenance, so it shows its age.

Why was the tower built here?

This isn't an ordinary viewing tower - it was raised as a monument to a peasant uprising that broke out in 1627 against the local lord, Pavel Michna of Vacínov, notorious for his harsh treatment of the region's farmers. The rebelling peasants retreated to Neštětická Hora and made their last stand there, but were ultimately defeated by the noble's forces in what became known as the Battle of Neštětická Hora. The concrete monument-tower was built in the 1920s and formally opened on 18 August 1927, with an estimated 20,000 people attending the ceremony - a remarkable turnout for such a small rural area.

How do you get to the top?

A yellow-marked hiking trail, about 800 metres long, leads to the tower from a crossroads above the village of Neštětice, on the road connecting Konopiště and Neveklov. It's a short, easy climb suitable for families with children. The hill can also be reached by bike along a paved path, and, with some effort, by car, although it isn't set up as a proper driving route.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the tower stands in woodland, the clearest views come in late autumn, winter and early spring, when the trees are bare. In summer the surrounding forest is in full leaf, which limits the outlook, but the walk itself and the historical atmosphere make the trip worthwhile regardless of season. The hill pairs well with a visit to nearby Konopiště Castle or a longer walk through the Posázaví countryside.
