Neděliště Castle is a Baroque residence that replaced an older Renaissance stronghold in the village of the same name, not far from Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic. How old is the village, and where does its name come from?

Neděliště is first recorded in written sources in 1143, when it belonged to the Strahov Monastery in Prague. By 1226 the settlement was already associated with a nobleman named Ctibor of Neděliště, which suggests the village had its own local lord well before the fortifications appeared.

When was the first stronghold built here?

The site's fortified history really begins in the 16th century, when Neděliště came into the hands of the Hamza family of Zábědovice. They built a Renaissance stronghold here, completed in 1571 according to a surviving stone plaque bearing the Hamza coat of arms and that date. After 1579, the founder's grandsons split the estate among themselves: the stronghold, the manor court and part of the village went to Pavel Hamza of Zábědovice, and that section of the settlement became known from then on as Lower Neděliště.

How did a Baroque chateau replace the old fortress?

The turning point came in 1705, when Alžběta Lukrécie Dobřenská left the estate to her uncle, Karel Ferdinand Dobřenský of Dobřenice. The new owner considered the old Renaissance stronghold too modest for his needs and, before his death in 1734, had a grand Baroque chateau built right next to it, completed before 1748. That Baroque building forms the core of the castle as it stands today. The Dobřenský family kept the estate until 1862.

What happened to the castle in the 19th century?

In 1862 the property was bought by Count Jaroslav of Šternberk, who carried out a thorough renovation, finished in 1865. The refurbished residence did not stay untouched for long: in 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War, the castle suffered serious damage, and repairs had to start again from 1867. After Jaroslav's death in 1874, the estate passed to his daughter Růžena, who married into the Croy family.
