Nature reserve Králova zahrada

Nature reserve Králova zahrada

Opatov, Czechia

About this place

Králova zahrada is a nature reserve in the municipality of Opatov, in the Svitavy district, situated between the towns of Česká Třebová and Svitavy, southwest of the Semanín railway station. Covering 17.36 hectares, the area was declared a protected nature reserve in 1994 for its exceptionally well-preserved waterlogged forest ecosystems.

What does this reserve protect?

The main purpose of the reserve is to preserve alder floodplain forest with a natural admixture of spruce, growing in a waterlogged forest valley. This damp, nutrient-rich terrain has made the site one of the spatially most extensive localities of spring snowflake (Leucojum vernum) in the entire Svitavy region.

Why visit Králova zahrada in spring?

In early spring, typically in March, the waterlogged forest valley turns into a sea of white as blooming spring snowflakes form dense carpets of flowers, visible from the forest entrance and stretching for hundreds of meters. This spectacle draws nature lovers and photographers from across the region, and local media regularly cover the blooming as one of the most striking early-spring natural attractions in the area.

Beyond the spring snowflake, the reserve's forest floor also hosts other early-spring plant species — cowslip, mezereon (spurge-laurel), lily of the valley relatives such as Solomon's seal, wood anemone, and star-of-Bethlehem. This variety makes a spring walk through the reserve rewarding even for visitors without a background in botany.

What is the character of the terrain?

The reserve occupies a waterlogged forest valley with a distinctive microclimate — a high groundwater level supports moisture-loving understory vegetation while sustaining a natural mixed stand in which alder predominates over spruce. The territory is managed by the Regional Authority of the Pardubice Region, which ensures ongoing administrative protection and monitoring of the ecosystem's condition.
