Narvik Church

Narwik, Norway

About this place

Narvik Church (Narvik kirke) is a stone parish church of the Church of Norway in the town of Narvik, in Nordland county in northern Norway. Completed in 1925, it remains the main church of the local parish.

What is Narvik Church?

It is a large stone building raised in the long church style, meaning an elongated plan built around a clear nave axis. The interior seats about 700 people, making it one of the larger churches in the region. Besides serving as the parish church, it is the seat of the Ofoten deanery (prosti) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland.

Who designed it?

The plans were drawn by architect Olaf Nordhagen. From 1909 until his death in 1925 he led the restoration of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, one of Norway's most important monuments, and Narvik Church was among his last works. The church was consecrated on 16 December 1925.

How did it come to be built?

From 1900 to 1925 the town used a railway assembly hall as its church. As the town and parish grew, that arrangement stopped being enough. A first design from 1914 was abandoned when the economic crisis that followed the First World War hit the town. In 1922 Nordhagen produced an entirely new proposal, and that is the one that was built.

Did the church survive the Second World War?

Narvik saw heavy fighting and widespread destruction in 1940. Frydenlund, the district where the church stands, was largely spared. The church is therefore described as one of the few buildings in town to come through the wartime bombing. It should not be confused with the Peace Chapel, built in 1957 on the site of a chapel destroyed in the 1940 fighting.

Why visit?

The church is a good stop on a walk through Narvik if you are interested in sacred architecture in northern Norway and in the town's pre-war history. Its solid stone mass stands out among buildings rebuilt after 1940. It pairs well with other places that commemorate the battles of spring 1940. Because it is a working parish church, services and parish events may limit access to the interior, so plan your visit with that in mind.
