About this place
Museu Militar do Porto is the military museum of the Portuguese Army, located at Rua do Heroísmo 329 in Porto. It preserves military history through uniforms, weapons, vehicles and thousands of miniature soldiers.
When did the museum open?
The museum officially began operating on 1 April 1977, but its roots go back to the late nineteenth century. A Porto painter, Joaquim Vitorino Ribeiro, started gathering objects and documents linked to the history of the armed forces. That personal passion seeded a collection which the army later took over and grew into a public institution.
What is inside?
The showpiece is a collection of roughly 16,000 miniature soldiers. Arranged in scenes and formations, they show uniforms and equipment from many periods, which makes them a hit with children and history lovers alike.
Beyond the figurines, the displays include:
- uniforms and insignia,
- photographs and documents,
- bladed weapons and firearms,
- artillery pieces and military vehicles,
- historic relics, among them the sword associated with Afonso Henriques, Portugal's first king.
The story is not limited to Portugal. The museum covers military history worldwide, including both world wars.
Where are the larger exhibits?
Heavier equipment from the First and Second World Wars stands in the grounds around the main building and in a two-storey, hangar-like hall called the Pavilhão das Armas. Wandering among the guns and vehicles is a pleasant change from galleries of small objects.
A building with a difficult past
Part of the museum occupies a building that once served as headquarters of the PIDE, the secret political police that operated under Salazar's regime (1926-1974). For many visitors this adds meaningful context: the site ties army history to the memory of the country's authoritarian era.
