Museu Maçónico Português

Lisboa, Portugal

About this place

Museu Maçónico Português (the Portuguese Masonic Museum) is a museum about the history and symbolism of Freemasonry in Portugal, located in Lisbon's Bairro Alto district. It sits inside the headquarters of the Grande Oriente Lusitano, a Masonic body founded in 1802, and is one of the more unusual stops in the capital for anyone who enjoys history, symbols and offbeat collections.

What is the Masonic Museum in Lisbon?

It is a thematic museum run by the Masonic organisation itself. It explains what Freemasonry was and is in Portugal, which symbols were used in rituals, and how the movement's fate became entangled with twentieth-century Portuguese history. The museum is an institutional member of ICOM, the International Council of Museums.

What is the museum's history?

The Grande Oriente Lusitano saw the need for a museum as early as the beginning of the twentieth century, and the museographic project began to take shape around 1918. It was cut short in May 1935, when the dictatorship outlawed Freemasonry in Portugal and dissolved its assets.

After the revolution of 25 April 1974 the idea was revived. The core of the collection came from goods the state returned to the Grande Oriente Lusitano, items seized during the dictatorship. Donations from many Portuguese Freemasons later enlarged it. Sources give different opening dates: some speak of a founding in 1984, others of a formal inauguration on 21 February 1986.

What can you see?

Visitors see objects tied to Masonic symbolism and ritual: aprons, swords, pillars, mosaics, gloves, set squares, compasses and plumb lines. For outsiders it is a chance to see how the tools of craftsmen became a language of symbols.

The museum reopened on 16 September 2023 after renovation and a redesign of its displays. The new permanent exhibition has three parts:

  • Symbolic, on the meaning of signs and rituals,
  • Daily Life and History, placing Freemasonry in the context of Portuguese history,
  • High Degrees, on the higher degrees of initiation.

Who is it for?

It suits lovers of Portuguese history, symbolism and twentieth-century politics, and anyone looking for something beyond Lisbon's standard trail. Bairro Alto is a good base for combining the visit with a stroll through the neighbourhood, its cafes and viewpoints.
