Museu de Ovar

Ovar, Portugal

About this place

Museu de Ovar is one of the oldest and richest museums in the Aveiro region, housed in a century-old building at Rua Heliodoro Salgado 11, right in the center of the town of Ovar. It was founded on January 8, 1961, on the initiative of Grupo 66 of the Corpo Nacional de Escutas (National Scout Corps) of Ovar, which rented the first rooms of the historic house to display items and mementoes tied to local culture that had been collected over the years. As more rooms of the building became available, the museum kept expanding until it eventually occupied the entire house.

What can visitors see at Museu de Ovar?

Originally, the institution functioned as an ethnographic repository for the region, gathering testimonies of everyday life among the people of Ovar and its surroundings. Over time, the scope of the collection broadened considerably — today the museum also covers painting, sculpture, craftsmanship, medal-making and numismatics. Altogether, the collection brings together more than 500,000 pieces from various artists, periods and regions, making it one of the more impressive regional collections in Portugal.

What ethnographic holdings does the museum keep?

At the heart of the exhibition are traditional regional costumes, hand-made lace and delicate embroidery, testifying to the traditional craftsmanship of the women of Ovar. The museum also displays objects tied to old trades and everyday customs, along with examples of the architecture and interior design typical of the region's popular houses. A particularly popular part of the collection is a set of hundreds of dolls from many different countries, forming a surprisingly varied gallery.

What artworks are part of the collection?

Beyond its ethnographic holdings, Museu de Ovar also boasts a substantial fine-art collection — more than a thousand oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and gouaches, as well as sculptures and graphic works. A special place is reserved for ceramics by Querubim Lapa, regarded as one of the greatest Portuguese ceramicists of the 20th century — the collection includes seventeen of his ceramic plaques. The museum also features contemporary collections of painting on ceramics, blending tradition with a more modern approach to artistic craft.

When is the best time to visit?

Museu de Ovar welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The museum is closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays, so it's worth planning a visit in advance.
