About this place
Museu de Fotografia da Madeira – Atelier Vicente's is a museum in Funchal set inside the former studio of the Vicente family, one of the oldest continuously operating photography businesses in Portugal. The site brings together the history of photographic technique and a visual record of Madeira itself, preserved across an archive built up over more than a century.
Where did this place come from?
The atelier was founded in the mid-19th century by Vicente Gomes da Silva, and the family business passed down through successive generations of photographers carrying the same name. The studio operated without interruption from the 1850s until 1978, documenting island life through portraits of local families, landscapes, and public events. In 1979 the Regional Government of Madeira acquired the entire collection, including cameras and equipment, studio furniture, frames with original prints, and an archive of roughly one and a half million photographs.
How has the museum changed over time?
After the collection was reorganised as a museum institution, it opened to the public on 22 March 1982 under the name Photographia – Museu "Vicentes". In 2014 the building closed for extensive renovation and modernisation works, reopening under its current name, Museu de Fotografia da Madeira, on 29 July 2019, following an investment of around 1.7 million euros.
What makes the atelier's collection stand out?
Among the most notable items in the collection is the story tied to a portrait of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, taken by Vicente Gomes da Silva in 1860. The photograph earned him the title "Photographe de Sa Majesté l'Impératrice d'Autriche" from the Austro-Hungarian court in 1866. Decades later, in 1903, the founder's son, Vicente Júnior, was granted the title "Photographo da Casa Real Portuguesa" for his photographic documentation of King Carlos and Queen Amélie of Orléans during their royal visit to Madeira in 1901.
What can visitors see inside?
The exhibition includes original photographic equipment, specialised studio furniture once used to pose clients, frames holding preserved prints, and period publications on photographic technique. A particular highlight is the archive itself — a collection of around 1.5 million negatives and prints documenting both everyday island life and events of historical significance.
Where is the museum located?
The museum sits in Funchal, Madeira's capital, inside a building that functioned as a working photography studio for most of its history before being converted into a museum space open to visitors.
