Museu de Arte Sacra de Grândola

Grândola, Portugal

About this place

Museu de Arte Sacra de Grândola is a small sacred art museum in Grândola, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It opened in 2010 as a unit of the Museum Network of the Diocese of Beja. It occupies a former hermitage dedicated to Saint Sebastian, and admission is free.

What is this museum?

The museum was created by the Department of Historical and Artistic Heritage of the Diocese of Beja, together with the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Grândola and the municipality. The collection was not brought in from elsewhere. It comes from local churches and brotherhoods, so it tells the story of how people in this area practised their faith.

The museum welcomed its first visitors in 2011 with an exhibition titled "Loci Iacobi – Lugares de Santiago, Lieux de Saint Jacques", devoted to places linked with Saint James.

What can you see here?

The permanent collection holds about one hundred works. They come from churches in the municipal seat, from the parishes of Azinheira dos Barros and Santa Margarida da Serra, and from the Brotherhood of the Holy House of Mercy. Expect sculptures, paintings and examples of decorative arts from the parishes and brotherhoods of the Grândola municipality.

The building and the Way of Saint James

The museum sits in a sixteenth-century religious building, the hermitage of São Sebastião. One stretch of the Way of Saint James (Caminho de Santiago) passes nearby, used by pilgrims heading to Compostela. That makes the museum a natural stop for walkers on the route, and its opening exhibition drew on the same tradition.
